The Problem.
Aberdeenshire Library had over 25,000 pages of the Fraserburgh Herald newspaper spanning the period 1884 to 1920.
The contents of the newspapers were not easily available for the general public to view online and the library sought a solution that would make this possible.
The Outcome.
A centralised, searchable and accessible online tool, enabling easy access to the Fraserburgh Herald Newspaper archives.
The Process.
The project was kicked off with a workshop involving Aberdeenshire Library stakeholders, to fully scope the project and define the desired solution and outcomes. User Research was undertaken to define user needs and fully understand the requirements.
Once the project was defined we were able to scan and index the Fraserburgh Herald newspaper content which was held on microfiche. Using OCR (Optical Character Recognition) techniques, we were able to create searchable content which we then built into a fully digitised online document store.
We then integrated the document store with the Aberdeenshire Library’s website, making it available to the public and enabling registered members to leave comments against the archived newspapers.
We also designed and built the online tool to incorporate intelligent search functionality, enabling users to retrieve content by date and/or keywords.
We are all delighted with the layout, functionality, design and engineering of the interface.
